Like the title says: how do you think when you put together a routin? What's your do's and dont's? Do you like juggling to music, and in that case do you juggle on the beat or not? What's most important in a routin when it comes to performance?

I wouldn't call myself a professional juggler, I'm mainly a singer/actor/dancer. But in the last year and a half I've been working as a clown as well and this summer I've incorporated juggling in one of the clown shows. This have been heavy on the humourous side of juggling, working with steals and runarounds. But I'd like to evolve as a juggler, and lately I've been experimenting with juggling to music and trying to put together a more serious 3 ball act juggling on the beat to a song.

I guess from my own point of view as an audience I like either humourous acts of juggling, or those jugglers who juggle with a lot of skill - preferably to music, "on the beat" juggling have really captured me. Still it have to be performed, "flirting" with the audience and not just a dull show of skill.

Haven't seen that book in a year and a half. And I noticed there's a difference in the Mills' Mess pattern compared to the youtube video I happened to learn it from. It's the second throw - Tony Steinbach makes the throw straight up and down, cathing in the other hand, whereas the Encyclopedia describes the second throw as a over the top throw to the other hand and cathing the last throw in the lower hand instead.

Is there a disadvantage later on to learn either version (going on to 4 or 5 balls Mills' Mess)? Is there a more common version, or is it of no importance at all wich version you use?

I have found other versions as well, mostly of people starting with two balls in the lower hand instead of the upper one, but that only effects cold starts I guess.

Which version do you use?

edit by Samael: added BBcode Video

First off, great looking forum. Hopefully it becomes very popular.

Now, this may sound strange, and I'm not sure if it's a problem that a lot of other jugglers have. I can do about 50 catches of a 5 ball cascade. Okay, so that's not expert numbers juggling, but it shows I've spent a fair few hours practicing. Where I encounter problems, is not with the throws, but with the catches. In fact, while I feel very comfortable with the 3 ball cascade for the most part, I still drop while doing this simple pattern simply because the balls slip out of my hand when I catch them. I don't have this problem with clubs because of the way the handle lands in my hand, it is much easier to catch.

I was thinking maybe using different balls would help? All I have are 100g beanbags. I thought maybe going for 180g beanbags might help. At the same time though, a lot of jugglers manage high numbers with balls lighter than 100g, so I feel that I should be able to use them. I live far away from a juggling shop, so don't really have the opportunity to test out different balls at the moment.

Just wondering if anyone has any advice about either technique or ball choice that might help. Thanks in advance.
